MySpace is holding an event in San Francisco tomorrow with 250 application developers to ceremonially launch its application platform¡for developers only, that is.

Over the next month, developers big and small will have the opportunity to begin developing applications for MySpace using the company¡¯s new, OpenSocial-based APIs. Until that month has passed, only a maximum of ten or so users will be able to install each app at a time, ensuring that the period is used strictly for development, testing, and feedback purposes. MySpace has also not given any developers first dibs to the platform and is thereby opening up a fair playing field to all. The applications directory won¡¯t be rolled out, and the user cap lifted, until March when the platform is effectively released for users as well.

This staggered approach to deployment is one of several things that make MySpace¡¯s platform different from Facebook¡¯s, which was released all at once and with several launch partners. While MySpace¡¯s platform will provide developers with the standard canvas pages and profile real estate, it will also allow developers to add functionality to users¡¯ ¡°homepages¡± (i.e. their start pages that are not shown to friends). This provides developers with the rather unique opportunity of providing users with more private functionality than can be afforded by a profile page. For example, a developer could integrate email and RSS feed capabilities that turn MySpace into a more personalized homepage-type destination in contrast to (and perhaps in support of) its social app pedigree.

MySpace is also allowing Flash on profile pages. Beyond that, much of what developers encounter will be familiar. Techcrunch needs to STEP IN NOW WITH GOOGLE TO FIX MYSPACE. Myspace has simply used Opensocial as a marketing ploy. In reality it does not use any of the conventions of opensocial and sets a very dangerous for the future of the web and opensocial. There is 0 compatability between OS apps and myspace apps.

Here we go again. Apple Inc. and the ¡°pod¡± ownership letters¡YouTube with the ¡°infringement¡± letters. The fat greasy lawyers want a part of the action and it¡¯s going to get worse. It¡¯s the cheesy underbelly of the web and the slime oozes from the cracks. Good luck, Michael. I have my own ongoing battle with the word ¡°iTour¡± in my domain.

Bad execution but makes business sense. I am certain that Youtube is planning some sort of content distrtubtion that involves for-pay content. If there are tools out there that can easily download video - blah blah blah

As if my opinion matters, I will offer one. I would not cease and desist. I would force YouTube to do what they probably have intended to do all along AFTER they everyone hooked on their currently open and free web-based API¡¯s. They intend to start charging people for using their API¡¯s after they get everyone hooked. If they are forced to reveal this strategy before everyone gets hooked on them as part of ¡°mash-up¡± site content aggregation, then people might think twice about using them in the first place.

You tool (and others¡¯) use in this manner forces their hand and can result in protecting a LOT of people from being ¡°jacked¡± at the point of a gun later when Google decides they want to start collecting revenue from YouTube¡¯s use.

Cease and desist orders should be used with extreme caution when directed at the press. Otherwise they are a club that preemptively turns off discussion ( a right I consider invaluable) Doesn¡¯t look like W & S really exhausted their options before going to this measure. (2 voicemails does not a great effort make).

I knew this will happen the minute I saw your post about the tool on TC, but did not realize that it will be this soon. It just showed how popular TC is, considering this kind of tools exist and continue to exist way before TC has it in the public. But seriously, we just saw the tip of the iceberg about YouTube¡¯s issues regarding to the nature of its business that everybody is watching how it will evolve, the second Google bought YouTube.

My take on this will be to put myself in GooTube¡¯s shoes and think what I will do. I think I will have to do the same thing which is to keep improving on the technology front to solve the problem (don¡¯t know if it is ever going to be solved) while continue to hire lawyers to show that GooTube is serious about the issues it is facing and life goes on.

I got my first Cease and desist letter via email the other day from Digg. It was nicer wording that the youtube one. I have a domain name that uses digg in it so I am at fault and like Micheal I will take it down (well rename the site).

the letter shown here seems very heavy handed, the only bit I can see where they have a point is in using the name youtube but you could rename the product for that to be fixed. As for the content issue I fail to see what their point is. when you view the video it is no longer on thier site as its downloaded to your computer.

Just imagine this, in year 2050, technology has enable human brain to act as a massive digital storage device as well as to have a way to distribute the information in our brain among people without any external devices. Do lawyers write a letter demanding everyone to cease and desist? I think the technology is not the problem here. It is the copyright law of today.

The music industry has demonstrated that using systems to avoid copies is useless and that user are not bandit and so that they are going to pay small sums to see contents.

If Google is planning to use their websites to broadcast video from majors, I believe this stupid letter is only a demonstration to them (quite stupid people) that they care about copyright protection.

They¡¯re just pissed that you broke the YouTube/ Google thing. I don¡¯t know that nay part of it is problematic EXCEPT the YouTube name in the title, but that¡¯s an easy fix.

¡°TechCrunch is not authorized to promote YouTube?¡± Does that mean I don¡¯t get to write about YouTube in my blogs? Exactly how DO they think people found them in the first place? If they are going to require authorization, I think we should all stop linking and writing about YouTube. Watch the hit numbers dip, and maybe they will change their tune.

I can¡¯t decide if I should be scratching my head, laughing my @$$ off, or just be plain pissed off.

The fact that YouTube, of all freakin¡¯ people, is suing someone for copyright infringement would be like Jesus Christ crucifying someone for turning water into wine: It¡¯s just plain stupid and hypocritcal.

It also makes me very sad that, since Google now owns YouTube, they are in someway involved in this¡.and it really makes me question my respect for them.

If you were hurting someone, making money from the videos, etc. I could understand, but this is just plain ridiculous.

We understand if you take down the video. Sometimes it¡¯s just not worth the fight. We must spread the word about youtube to average users. I would stop using the ¡°service¡± as your content becomes their content:

I am wondering whether this is linked by Google, who infact have not yet completed complete take over of youtube.. Would be interesting to see if this is continued once YouTube is officaly owned and controller by Google..Well keep fighting Mike

Ditto to Don¡¯s point. I¡¯ve seen betas that run better than MySpace. Some feature is constantly down, and I can¡¯t tell you how many times MySpace has ¡°eaten¡± a blog post or comment I¡¯ve tried to send. Acceptable in a startup service, but now that it¡¯s owned by a company with the ability but refusal to invest in necessary improvements, it¡¯s VERY frustrating. It¡¯s like Fox wants to squeeze every dime out of MySpace without having to invest in the necessary tech development. Not to mention its inability to patrol spam profiles, event invitations, friend requests, etc. It is inexplicably difficult to do things as basic as making a ¡°friends¡± list to limit blog entries to, etc.

The widgets, on the other hand, are one of the redeeming features in MySpace. When MySpace core functions won¡¯t work, the widgets usually do, and are especially handy when they allow MySpace users to share content they wouldn¡¯t be able to with MySpace tools alone. I don¡¯t understand (and yet, of course, the cynical side of me does) why a website majority-owned by one of the most lucrative media companies in the world could be so poorly designed and executed.

The other thing about MySpace is that in the world of social networking, there is a loss of control over content, which includes the little widgets users choose to install. I don¡¯t know why MySpace is cracking down on widgets so much¡ seems like an inevitability in the social networking business. And it all would be very, very different if MySpace¡¯s core functionality actually worked. If a MySpace user reports a technical issue, it goes into a black hole and nobody ever hears from the tech team.

In short, if MySpace put as much effort into making sure its basic tools worked as it does into banning widgets, it would be far better off.

Mike I just wrote something very similar on my blog this morning actually, talking about the myspace ecosystem.

When I was running Music Video Codes and Yashi, one of my biggest fears was the incredible dependency I had on MySpace and their ability to simply block my services at any given time.

I think what we see happening now is what FIM was explaining at the First Round Capital CEO summit in January. Its the ¡°friend or foe¡± argument that my partner Aaron Cohen and I had with their executives that spoke at the summit during their Q&A with the crowd¡

It appears MySpace has realized or as they would see it, learned their lesson from allowing widgets to grow and directly compete as large destination sites, such as YouTube. What is strange to me is why they would attempt to repress their ecosystem since its the same ecosystem of widgets that enhances the user experience on their website to begin with. Its a very fine line and difficult to decide which widgets really pose a threat to their business, and which do not.

I believe there are currently two fundamental rules they are living by at MySpace. 1.) No monetization on their pages and 2.) No communication products that can grow into a destination site.

Even though I understand the above rules, it would still be more logical to me if there was evidence that these widgets were stunting their growth at MySpace, which clearly is not the case.

It should be interesting to see how this unfolds now that MySpace is planned to launch their own widget development product serice for independent developers to build widgets for them.

MySpace is crossing over to the dark side and leaving us behind in the republic¡ who will take over in the new world?

Myspace blocked vidilife for copyright violations. Universal music is suing myspace and named vidilife in the complaint. Has nothing to do with Brad Greenspan, or they¡¯d block his other site livevideo. Imeem is being blocked for its music playlists.. imeem encourages users (not artists) to upload their songs and share them online, which is illegal.

imeem isn¡¯t blocked at the moment anymore. woopie! I think I¡¯m going to put a playlist on and just add songs to the playlist to prevent changing codes each time I want a new song just in case¡

I still don¡¯t get it. Myspace gets more attention when widgets like imeem and others are used on their website. It attracts more users because then they can customize their profile with a variety of more songs. If you use myspace¡¯s music player you only have one song while with imeem you can have a playlist of your favorite songs. Myspace brags so much about its number of members but yet I guarantee every member gets more frustrated with every widget blocked. In reality myspace is afraid of the widgets because they get more attention. Imeem isn¡¯t needed on myspace to survive. They have a good user base and the reason people like it is because they can find virtually any song they want and listen to it however many times they want wich sounds good to me. Without widgets on your profile theres really no reason to get on it. They don¡¯t need each other but when they join up they achieve more. Imeem gets more attention and Myspace gets more users and were all happy. And if Imeem hasn¡¯t gotten a lawsuit for copyrights I think it¡¯s because they are doing something right
